Mineral processing requires a large amount of water. Through mineral washing and flotation, useful minerals are separated from waste minerals. Useful minerals dissolve in acids or alkalis to form hydroxides or salts, while undissolved materials are separated through flocculation. The primary role of polyacrylamide in mineral processing is to separate water from gangue, thereby enabling the recycling of water. Additionally, polyacrylamide can be used to dewater the sludge resulting from the sedimentation and separation of gangue.

Many minerals utilize processes such as flotation and washing, including coal, iron ore, phosphate, bauxite, copper ore, gold ore, zinc ore, and sand washing. Anionic and nonionic polyacrylamides are typically used in these mining operations.
